Call for Papers for php|tek Conference
Dec 02, 2008 @ 06:00:00

With a reminder from php|architect today, they've posted their Call for Papers for the upcoming php|tek conference.

php|tek aims to be the conference of reference for PHP enthusiasts and professionals. As such, it features technical talks on topics that range from programming paradigms to internals development, all aimed at an audience comprised of beginners and professionals alike.

This year's theme is "$build->deploy->scale();"'"a nod to PHP's growing role in the rapid development of Internet applications of all sizes, from small to massive, covering a wide array of PHP-related topics. Regardless of the subject, we are partial to talks that tackle a specific issue in a thorough way, with a very pragmatic slant. Remember, attendees will come to the conference with the intent of learning something that they can take home and use in their daily lives'"they are not necessarily interested in why things work, but they are definitely interested in how they work.

Speakers get free access to the conference, some travel assistance (not completely paid for), and compensation for each of the talks given. Instead of havaing specific tracks of talks, they're opting for a "tag-based" approach, applying as many tags that fit to the talk.

To submit your talk ideas, send them off to proposals@phparch.com and include the usual contact info as well as a title, synopsis, audience level, talk type, and topics included in the presentation.

Remember, the deadline is December 21, 2005 - so get those proposals in today!

php|tek Conference Kicks Off
Apr 26, 2006 @ 20:59:59

php|architect's php|tek conference has officially started, and this year they're looking to provide the most up-to-date coverage they can of the event for those unable to attend.

They've included lots of resources to attendees (including travel info, the conference program, and the Zend Certification exam schedule) as well as the live resources for anyone and everyone:

You can check out the current photostream on thias page of the site, where it grabs the latest shots from Flickr accounts tagged with the "phptek" tag. There's also an effort underway to "community blog" the conference via the use of Technorati tags.

According to this post on the php|architect site, all of the attendee packages have been snatched up - a complete sellout crowd.

Don't worry, though - for those that aren't able to attend, Marcus Whitney, host of the Pro::PHP Podcast will be presenting a special edition podcast shortly after the conference wraps.

Derick Rethans' Blog:
Two Community Contributions
Mar 01, 2006 @ 13:09:51

Derick Rethans has two new posts about some of his current involvement in the PHP community - one about an article, and one about a conference.

In this month's issue of php|architect you can find an article on the eZ components. In this article I explain the goals for the project as well as architectural decisions that we took while developing this components library. It also shows a small example on how to use the components. Unfortunately the service (http://geo.derickrethans.nl.) it talks about is not yet life... I should get that going soon.

And, in reference to the upcoming php|tek conference:

Some time ago I already wrote that I will be speaking at php|tek. Besides the three talks I will also give a tutorial/workshop on (proper) database design and optimization.

His talks will include: "A Developer's Guide to Successful Database Design", "eZ Components - RAD for PHP", and "Derick's Ranting Hour".

For a complete listing of the schedule of the conference, check out the php|architect site detailing the conference.

php|tek 2006
Jan 30, 2006 @ 13:14:43

Ilia Alshanetsky has a quick note about his proposal for php|tek being approved and some of his thoughts on the upcoming conference.

On the conference's agenda I have just two items this time; I will be giving an introductory talk on PDO that should be of interest to anyone writing new PHP applications that utilize databases. The other item is a seminar on PHP Security, which will cover web security topics from the ground up, with the focus on web applications designed in PHP.

Aside from my own talks, Marco has collected an impressive array of speakers with notables such as Rasmus, Marcus, Derick, John, Sara (who I've never met in real life) and many others. So if you need to get away from the day to day drudgery and learn something about PHP in the process, this a conference you don't want to miss!

If you want to take advantage of the Early Bird pricing on the conference, you don't have much time left - it ends January 31st and is a discount of about $100 USD off of the regular price. For complete information and the list of presentations, you can get it all at their site...
